Strengthening the Competency of Engineering Professionals in Sierra Leone

Engineers for Change Sierra Leone (EfCSL) is pleased to have officially launched ‘Strengthening the Competency of Engineering Professionals in Sierra Leone’ (StreP COM-SL) pilot project on 16^th July 2026 at the New Brookfields Hotel. This is an initiative designed to strengthen the practical competencies of early-career engineers and technicians through structured mentorship, supervised workplace experience, and continuous professional development.  

This milestone has been made possible with funding from Lloyd’s Register Foundation, which awarded EfCSL a £10,000 small grant to implement this one-year pilot in partnership with the Young Engineering Professionals Forum (YEPF).

Lloyd’s Register Foundation is an independent global charity that supports research, innovation, and education to make the world a safer place. Its mission is to use the best evidence and insight to help the global community focus on tackling the world’s most pressing safety and risk challenge. The Foundation’s support reflects a shared commitment to developing engineering professionals who can contribute to safer practice, and stronger institutions.

The project brings together key stakeholders from the engineering profession, including the Professional Engineering Regulatory Council (PERC), the Sierra Leone Institution of Engineers (SLIE), academia, engineering firms, mentors, and development partners, to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice. Through workplace placements, competency assessments, mentor development, and continuous professional development. StreP COM-SL seeks to equip the next generation of engineers with the skills, confidence, and ethical standards required to meet the evolving needs of Sierra Leone’s infrastructure sector.
