Good transportation gets people to work and is integral to the supply chain of businesses. It also gets people and goods to the marketplace and stimulates economic activities.
In Sierra Leone, transport should support businesses and economic growth and social development through providing fast and efficient movement of people and goods. The mining activities in Sierra Leone have given Sierra Leoneans much needed access to employment opportunities and in turn improving access hinges on better transport infrastructure including roads, tracks, bridges, footpaths and footbridges.
This paper gives the general overview of the highway transportation infrastructure in Sierra Leone and in particular, discusses the challenges facing the highway transportation infrastructure and opportunities for securing sustainable transport options in the future.

Sustainable practices that deliver business objectives are key for Sierra Leone to have a lasting legacy from the country’s wealth in natural mineral resources. The mining companies have the capacity and potential to support the Government of Sierra Leone in providing the required training and development for engineers, technician and artisans and to promote the development of sustainable local communities. Legislations are in place to facilitate such arrangements, e.g. through fiscal incentives.
The areas of priority that are considered relevant to enhancing sustainable practices in Sierra Leone’s mining sector are:
